Jean C. Clancy's Obituary
Jean Clancy, nee Canning, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the eldest
daughter of Margaret (Boyton) Canning. Her elementary and high
school years were spent in Anderson, Indiana. She attended Purdue
University. After her college years she was employed by the American
Red Cross Club and Recreation Service. It was wartime and the Red
Cross assigned her to a large aero club in Peterborough, England, under
the auspices of the U.S. 8th Air Force. At wars end, she was sent to
Germany where she served in Berlin with the Army of Occupation. When
that tour was ended she was posted to Kyushu, Japan, where she again
served with the Occupation Force. While in Japan she met and married
John W. Clancy, a U.S. Air Force Officer. At the end of her contract with
the Red Cross, she remained in Japan for three years as an Air Force
dependent.
After completing tours of duty with her husband at Air Defense Command
HQ, Strategic Air Command HQ, and NATO Headquarters in both Paris
and Brussels, the Clancy’s moved to McLean, Virginia, where her husband
retired in 1971. Upon her husband's demise in 1974, Jean opened a
women's specialty shop in McLean called TOP DRAWER, LTD.In
1980 Jean retired to a lakeside home in Fairfax, Virginia. In 1997 she
moved to Falcons Landing, the Air Force Retired Officer's Community in
Sterling, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W.
Clancy, her parents, Margaret and Eugene Canning and sister, Leslie
C. Gillespie of Young Harris, Georgia.
Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
