Jilda Capone Garity's Obituary
Jilda Capone Garity passed away on July 13, 2025, on the eve of her moving onto her next chapter in life. Jill, born May 30, 1950, in Arlington Virginia, graduated from Yorktown High School in 1968, enjoying many years of classmate reunions. She went on to graduate from the University of Miami where she learned to love the beauty of the ocean.
After a career in real estate, she began her decades long journey into painting. From simple realism depicting barns, houses and foxhunting murals, she grew into more impressionistic Plein Air, drawing inspiration from nature. She was tutored by Rob Vander Zees for many years, who encouraged her to develop a style called American Tonalist. Her paintings were representative of the tranquility or drama of nature. Capturing the sky and clouds became her trademark. She exhibited in the Art in the Mill, Artists in Middleburg, Long Branch Historical House, Loudoun Sketch Club exhibits, Vander Zees gallery in Alexandria, among others. Jill enjoyed being outdoors almost more than painting. She became a Master Gardner, past President of the Upperville Garden Club, designing and tending the gorgeous gardens at her farms in Philomont.
She loved horses and foxhunting, becoming a decades long member of Fairfax Hunt and Loudoun Fairfax Hunt. She took up sailing, then motorcycling on her Harleys. She became an avid follower of the Nantucket Treweryn Beagles.
A beautiful, loyal, fun-loving, athletic, talented lady leaves behind many many friends who loved her dearly. She is survived by her niece Leilani Capone, brother Ron Capone, brother-in-law Bob Garity, sister-in-law Lorry Ruml Hubbard, stepson Rob Garity and stepdaughter Joann Garity Barton.
Her husband James K. Garity predeceased her.
Her family and friends will honor and celebrate her life’s achievements at a future date.
