Joann F. Chappell's Obituary
Joann F. Chappell passed away on February 2, 2026 at the age of 94. She was born on October 23, 1931 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the daughter of Howard and Thudora Fanslow. She is survived by her three children: Cindy (John) Kwiatkowski, Candy (Bob) Mashack and Jay (Anne) Chappell; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Growing up in Ypsilanti, JoAnn studied dance and was a drummer in the Girls Drum and Bugle Corps. She was always honored to have been with the first group of young women on the University of Michigan football field. After graduation, JoAnn attended Cleary Business College.
Joann became an Army wife. She traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. She often set up dance studios and became active in Girl Scouts. Following that chapter of her life, she settled in Williamsburg, Virginia. She became an educational interpreter and guide at Colonial Williamsburg. Upon retirement, JoAnn moved to Leesburg, Virginia. She was active in her community book and gourmet clubs. She enjoyed spending time with her younger two children and their families.
She also traveled back to Michigan to visit her older daughter and family.
Joann lived a long, full life. She will be greatly missed as an intelligent, well read woman who loved to travel, have conversations and prepare great meals. Rest in peace, JoAnn.
