JoAnn Marie Garvin's Obituary
JoAnn Marie (Ryan) Garvin (89) passed away peacefully at her home in Aldie, VA on September 10, 2025. JoAnn was born in Springfield, Ohio on August 6, 1936, to Charles and Agnes Ryan.
JoAnn grew up in Springfield and after graduating high school she began working in a local bank until she met and married the love of her life Paul Joseph Garvin. In 1967 Paul’s career brought him to Virginia, and they moved their young family to Fairfax where they raised four children. In 1980 they built a house and moved the family out to their farm in Aldie, Virginia.
To say JoAnn was a homemaker doesn’t seem to say enough to describe what she meant to her family, but she truly did make a home for her husband, her four children, their spouses, and later the grandchildren. She knew everyone’s favorite food and cooked often. She was a quilter and made sure her loved ones all had one of her handmade quilts. When the grandchildren and great grandchildren came along she spoiled them all with gifts she’d pick up during one of her many shopping trips saying “I saw this and thought of you.”
JoAnn loved bluegrass music and she and Paul volunteered regularly for Lucketts Bluegrass at the old schoolhouse in Lucketts every Saturday night. She baked many pies and cakes for the weekly raffle and people lined up for tickets.
JoAnn was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Paul Garvin and her eldest son Joseph Garvin of Sperryville, Virginia. She is survived by her brother Dennis Ryan of Cincinnati, Ohio, her brother-in-law David (and Jacquie) Garvin of Ashton, Maryland, her daughter-in-law Sue Garvin of Sperryville, Virginia, her daughter Mary (and John) McDuffie of Silver Spring, Maryland, her son Danny (and Cheri) Garvin of Leesburg, Virginia, her daughter Ann (and Douglas) Johnson of Ellicott City, Maryland, her grandchildren Johnny (and Samantha) McDuffie, James (and Meghan) McDuffie, Paul McDuffie, Ben (and Rebekah) Rupchis, Ryan Garvin, Matthew (and Julie) Garvin, Sean Garvin as well as several great grandchildren, and extended family.
Family and friends will celebrate JoAnn with a Mass of Christian Burial at the old St John the Apostle Catholic Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia on September 19, 2025 at 11am. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia. In lieu of flowers the family invites you to consider a donation to the Luckett’s Bluegrass Foundation https://luckettsbluegrass.org/lucketts-bluegrass-foundation-2/ or Nature Camp Foundation https://www.naturecampfoundation.org/give/
