Joan Rodgers Shields' Obituary
Joan Rodgers Shields, age 87, of Potomac Falls, VA passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011.
Joan was born on Sunday, September 23, 1923 in Savannah, GA. A daughter of the late John Augustus Rodgers and the late Helen Katzenstein Rodgers. Joan relocated to the Washington, DC metropolitan area in 1940. She received her BS in Economics from the University of Maryland in 1943. She married James Donald Shields in Washington, DC on April 5, 1947.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1980, and by her two sisters Helen R. Williamson in 1998, and Elizabeth R. Jager in 1996.
She was a devoted mother to a son, James Donald Shields, Jr. & wife Sandra of Maple Valley, WA and a daughter, Kathleen Shields Fox & husband Henry of Potomac Falls, VA; she also leaves to cherish her memory her grandson Patrick James Earl Shields and granddaughter Allison Carol Fox.
Joan worked for the United States Air Force as a Federal Government civilian employee for 40 years. Following her retirement from the Federal Government, Joan worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in their Munich, Germany office.
The family will receive guests on Friday, August 26, 2011, from 10 am until the Funeral Service begins at 11:00 AM Friday at Loudoun Funeral Chapel 158 Catoctin Circle, SE Leesburg, VA 20175.
Interment will follow in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC.
