John was my regular and would request me as his server every Sunday morning. He would always bring a book and a smile. He would bring me gifts from his Disney trips, candy, and always overtip me because he felt like a burden for taking up one of my tables. Seeing him every Sunday was the highlight of my week. At first I thought he would come for the food but then he told me that he would come to see me for good company and conversation. He was such an amazing person, so selfless, kind, and humble. He would always make me laugh and give me amazing life advice. He truly made a difference in my life and left a mark on so many people. No matter what he was going through he would always make sure to show up every Sunday after church to see me. I would pray together with him for his health and for him to stay in remission. I am so heartbroken for this immense loss. My condolences to his family and friends. He would always tell about how proud he was of his daughter and of all her achievements of getting in the newspaper. John will always live on in my memories. I’m so blessed to have called him a friend.
He always played a game in the halls depending on which hall it was. He always chose a color and pretended it was lava. He was the most kiddish adult i've ever met. He always made class fun, even when we were learning boring stuff. He always wore a shirt from Disney World and he signed yearbooks with Disney stickers. One time, he even stood in the hallway, directing people around a patch of red tiles on the floor that was lava. If he wasn't a teacher, you would have thought he was a kid. From the first time he taught me, I knew he was going to be a good teacher.
I am heartbroken by this and I only knew him for one year. He was such a positive, joy-filled presence in our hallways at school. The kids loved him (and so did all the teachers). We could count on him to go above and beyond teaching our lessons when we were out. We practically begged him to become our designated school substitute. Absolutely loved his Disney-inspired wardrobe and his ever-present smile. Gone way too soon! :(
I was deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. He brought so much light to any room he entered. John guest-taught in my classroom many times at both MMS and BAM. He was wonderful with students and had a true passion for teaching history. We shared a special connection over our love of Kansas, as we both have children living there, and I know he enjoyed his visit this summer. He always spoke with such pride about his daughter and his work training lifeguards. The world was undoubtedly a better place because of John, and he will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his family. Lynn Metheny
