Dr. John Joseph McGovern's Obituary
John Joseph McGovern Jr., M.D., 70, died on Sunday, July 1, 2012, in Richmond, Va. Dr. McGovern was born on Dec. 23, 1941, in Camden, N.J., to the late John J. and Catherine Smith McGovern. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathleen Walsh McGovern. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mt. Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md., and received his medical degree from U.Va. In 1972, Dr. McGovern opened Loudoun County's first pediatric office in Leesburg, where he continued to practice and raise his family until his retirement.
Dr. McGovern is survived by his four beloved children: Megan Anderson (Chad), Katie Lareau (Mark), and John J. McGovern III, all of Richmond, Va., Colleen Gustavson (Scott) of Lincoln, Va.; his brother: Chris McGovern of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his sister: Mary Jane Davis of Sterling, Va.; and eight grandchildren: Finn, Carter, Eva, Claire, Declan, Rhett, Emmett, and Britta.
Friends may call on Friday, July 6, 2012, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle SE in Leesburg. A mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church/Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, 231 N. King St. in Leesburg.
Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Leesburg.
