John Irvin Alger's Obituary
COL John I. Alger (USA Ret) passed away on 14 February 2010 in Chantilly, VA, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. John was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Alger; mother, Violet (Davies) Alger; and brother, Robert Alger. He is survived by his sister, Marjorie Hinkel; his children, Chip Alger, Kelly Stern, Scott Miller, Jason Alger, Carolyn Thomas, Andrew Alger, Pamela Keegan; 12 grandchildren; 3 nieces; and 8 great nieces and great nephews.
John was a 1960 graduate of Aliquippa High School and a 1965 graduate of the United States Military Academy. He served two tours in Viet Nam, including one as an advisor to the Vietnamese Airborne. Having received his doctorate from Stanford University, he later served on the faculty at West Point as well as at the National War College. John retired from the Army in 1988 and held various positions in the private sector.
John leaves a legacy of love, courage, and pride and will be dearly missed.
The family will have two services: 27 February at 1000 (10AM) at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel (158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg VA 20175), immediately followed by a life celebration at the Brambleton Community Center (42645 Regal Wood Drive, Brambleton, VA 20148) from 12-6pm. The second service will be the Interment will be at the West Point Old Cadet Chapel, USMA (West Point, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY 10996) on 19 March at 1330 (1:30PM).
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the USMA Class of '65 Fund.
