Joseph Evans Bennett's Obituary
Joseph Evans Bennett died on December 5, 2012, in Leesburg, VA.
He was born on October 29, 1931 in Rocky Mount, NC to the late Norman Smith Bennett and Ruth Cecelia Dawson Bennett. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.
He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1955, earned his MSc (Geodesy) in 1962 and served as an Oceanographer until his 1969 transfer to the Office of Naval Research. In 1976 he transferred to the U.S. Antarctic Research Program at the National Science Foundation. He was a Life Member of the Challenger Society and a Charter Member of the Lucketts Ruritan Club.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Ann Bennett of Purcellville; sons, Joseph E. Bennett, II of San Diego, CA and Thomas P. Bennett of Nashville, TN; daughter, Samantha White; grandsons, Maxwell Bennett White and Samuel Iver White of Lovettsville, VA.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 1 pm at the funeral home.
Interment will be held privately at a later date.
