Joyce Evelyn DeBass' Obituary
Joyce Evelyn DeBass, 76, of Ashburn, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, surrounded by family.
Born on Saturday, June 26, 1948, in Falmouth, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Lopes and the late Evelyn Antone Lopes.
Joyce was an adventurous and free-spirited individual, unafraid to voice her opinions and stand her ground. She embraced new experiences. Her children deeply admire her for her remarkable boldness and unwavering authenticity.
After graduating from high school, Joyce relocated to Washington, D.C. It was during this time that she met an Ethiopian military attaché. Captivated by his charm, she soon married him. The couple moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where she secured a position with the U.S. Department of the Navy. They spent many years together and welcomed two children into their family.
Upon her return to the United States, Joyce spent much of her career as a legal secretary, including a significant period working for the prominent attorney and renowned mediator Kenneth Feinberg, best known for his role in administering the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. One of his books, titled What Is Life Worth, was dedicated to her in recognition of her significant contributions.
Joyce had an unwavering passion for her faith and took immense pride in sharing the word of the Lord with all those around her. Deeply committed to her spiritual journey, she pursued further knowledge and received her Minister's license from the Christian school founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell.
Joyce leaves behind a legacy cherished by many, including her son, Hailemariam DeBass, her daughter, Brickte DeBass, her brothers, Richard, Phillip, Manuel, and Raymond, her sister, Phyllis as well as her beloved grandchildren, Caleb and Abigail.
She was predeceased by brothers, Johnny, Dana and William Lopes.
Joyce wished to be remembered for the vibrant life she lived, and upon her passing, she envisioned a joyous Celebration of Life filled with the people who loved her. She specifically requested that no one wear black, as she wanted the occasion to be a lively and colorful tribute to her spirit
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 12:00PM at Union Cemetery, 323 North King Street, Leesburg, VA 20176. The celebration will continue with a party at 1PM, please check back for details.
