Judith "Judy" Whetzel Ahalt's Obituary
Judith "Judy" Whetzel Ahalt, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away at home on November 3, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on November 1, 1945, in Christiansburg, Virginia, Judy spent most of her life in Leesburg, VA, where she built a meaningful life of public service and connection. In her later years, she resided in White Post, VA.
Judy began her career alongside her twin sister, Patricia, as telephone operators, forging their way together in the workforce. She later worked as a secretary at Simpson Middle School before dedicating over two decades to the town of Leesburg. Judy joined the Leesburg Police Department as a secretary in 1987, then transitioned to the Planning Department in 1993. She excelled in her role, advancing to Administrative Assistant in Planning, and was appointed Clerk of Council in 2000. She retired in 2007, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and kindness.
Judy was preceded in death by her mother, Beryl Whetzel, and her father, James Graham. She is survived by her twin sister, Patricia Bigden; her twin half-siblings, Marquita Staley, and James Graham; her only son, Steffan Ahalt, and his wife, Kathy Ahalt; her granddaughters, Taylor Schafer (formerly Ahalt) and Sydney Ahalt; her nephew, Darryl Beans; former spouse, William H. Ahalt Jr. and sister-in-law, Patricia Mentzer; and she was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first great-grandchild, due in January 2025. Known for her warmth, compassion, and sense of humor, Judy was cherished by her family and friends and touched the lives of so many. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A visitation for family and friends to honor Judy’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, from 6 to 8 pm at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, S.E., Leesburg, VA 20175.
In accordance with Judy’s wishes, the family invites donations to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers, to help support the fight against cancer.
