Judith Mae Thompson Bland's Obituary
MRS. JUDITH MAE THOMPSON BLAND, 67, of Ashburn, Virginia since becoming ill in 2005 and moving in with her family, died on Monday January 7, 2007 in Lansdowne, VA. Mrs. Bland was born in Washington DC on May 26, 1940 to the late Russell Shawen and Olive Irene Ankers Thompson. Her husband John S. Bland and two brothers Gary and Buddy Thompson also predeceased. She was raised in Vienna, Virginia and attended Fairfax High School where she was the 1958 Homecoming Queen. Mrs. Bland placed in numerous beauty pageants in the Virginia area in her early youth.
She attended Mary Washington University on scholarship after graduating High School in 1958.
She worked for the federal government from the early 1960’s until her retirement in the mid 1990’s and was a resident of Arlington, Virginia most of her adult life.
After her husbands passing in 1989 Mrs. Bland established the John S. Bland Memorial Fund at George Mason University for music and voice scholarships. She also founded Red Rose Productions of Arlington. Red Rose Productions organized musical events that benefit music students. Mrs. Bland recently became a member of St. James Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her sister, Linda Hutchins of Azle, TX, daughter Robyn David, son-in-law John David of Ashburn, VA; daughter Kelley Elkins and son-in-law Bart Elkins of Winchester, VA; grandchildren Melanie David-Crowe, Garrett David, Gabrielle David, Jonathon Dao, T.J. Dao and Courtney Dao; great granddaughters, Madelyn and Olivia Crowe.
Friends may call at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel 158 Catoctin Cr. SE Leesburg, VA on Sunday January 13, 2008 from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday January 14, 2008 at St. James Episcopal Church 14 Cornwall St. Leesburg, VA.
Interment will follow in Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
