Kailash Kumari's Obituary
Kailash Kumari, lovingly known to many as “Badi Mummy”, was born 1932 in Rawal Pindi of the Undivided India. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her youngest son and his family in Virginia, before the dawn of March 28, 2024. She was 91 years of age.
With her husband, she was the head of the Malhotra family, which was comprised of 2 sons, 4 daughters, 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. The name “Badi Mummy” was first used by the grand-children because she was regarded as the eldest motherly figure in their lives. In addition to “Badi Mummy” she was known to hundreds of her friends and family as “mummy”, “massi”, “bua”, “tai ji”, and many other terms of endearment.
Kailash was raised in Rawal Pindi, and was the oldest sibling of 3 sisters and 1 brother. She and her husband moved to their last home in Dehradun soon after the India-Pakistan partition. They were married for 54 years before his passing in 2001. She was a witness of India’s independence from Britain as well as a survivor of the Indo-Pakistan division. Kailash spent the majority of her life in Dehradun, where she raised her 6 children. Her first child was born in 1951, speaking to the time she spent as a mother and the impact she has had on others who survive her.
Throughout her life, she was known for her agility, independence, and the respect she commanded. Despite her age, Kailash was young at heart. She was still riding roller coasters at Disney World with her grandchildren in her 70s. Her enthusiasm for technology was at par from her children to her great-grandchildren. Her meals also always had to include tasty savory snacks and end with ice cream.
Kailash spent the majority of her final years with her youngest son and his family in the US. Most of her time was spent meditating and observing the world around her. She will be greatly missed by all of her friends and family who live around the world. May she rest in peace.
