Laurie C. McDonald's Obituary
Laurie Carpenter McDonald, 61, of Leesburg, VA passed away on April 3, 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William S. Carpenter, Jr. and Jean Waibel Carpenter of San Antonio, TX. Mrs. McDonald was the loving wife of John C. McDonald and the incredibly devoted mother of Jeffery David of Arlington, VA and Emily Elizabeth of New York, NY. She is also survived by one brother, William S. Carpenter III of San Antonio, TX, sisters Abby Dentry of Parkton, MD, Mary Rose Barker of Fairfax Station, VA, Kathleen Carpenter also of San Antonio, Martha Carpenter of Keedsyville, MD, and ten nieces and nephews.
After graduating from James Madison University, Mrs. McDonald received a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from George Mason University. She has proudly served Loudoun County Public Schools for 39 years as teacher, assistant principal, and principal through February 16, 2011. Laurie was the principal of old Ashburn Elementary and opened the new Ashburn Elementary. She also opened Lowes Island Elementary School and most recently was principal of Evergreen Mill Elementary School in Leesburg.
Mrs. McDonald was a passionate educator and leader, devoting her time and energy to the students, parents and teachers of Loudoun County. In 2000, she was named the recipient of The Washington Post's Distinguished Educational Leadership Award.
In addition to her career, Laurie’s greatest joy was her family. She was an accomplished cook and hosted holiday gatherings for family, friends, and colleagues over many years. Additionally, Laurie thoroughly enjoyed travel and her time spent at the beach at her second home in Sarasota, FL.
Her loving and generous spirit will be forever cherished and deeply missed.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 46833 Harry Byrd Highway, Sterling, VA 20164.
