Lavenia Selby's Obituary
Lavenia “Benie” Ricka Mitchiner Selby, a resident of Leesburg since 1942, passes away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2009. She was born in Statesville, NC, April 17, 1913. She was the youngest of 4 children born to the Reverend John F. and Lutie P. Mitchiner. Benie was the wife of the late George Eugene Selby who preceded her in death. Although they had no children, Benie was loved by many as a surrogate Mom or Grandmother.
Until the time of her death, Benie was the oldest living member of Leesburg Baptist Church, where she served in many different capacities from deaconess to serving on the search committees when the church needed a new minister. She was a frequent guest speaker for women’s groups at neighboring churches. Benie received the Distinguished Member Award from Leesburg Baptist Church in 1988, being recognized for her work as one of the Lord’s finest salespeople.
Benie was a homemaker, until moving with her husband George to Morningside House, and later to Heritage Hall, where she continued to share her smiles, and sense of humor.
Benie is survived by three nephews, two nieces, and several great nephews. Although her family seems small, there are so many people whose lives she touched and who are better people for having known her.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the friends who visited Benie over the years, who sent her cards, and who helped her celebrate many special occasions. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Heritage Hall for the care, and the love they showed to “Mama” Benie, and to the Capital Hospice team for their devotion and special nursing care.
Friends may call on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 10 am until the time of service at 11am at the Leesburg Baptist Community Church 835 Lee Avenue,SW, Leesburg, VA 20175; with Rev. T. Jeffrey Michiner officiating.
Interment will follow Pipe Creek Cemetery, near New Windsor, MD.
