Leona Smith DuCharm's Obituary
Mrs. Leona Smith DuCharm, 90, of Potomac Falls, VA, died Monday, December 14, 2009, at West Falls Center at Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, VA. Leona was born on February 14, 1919 in Glady, WV. The fourth of seven children, Leona was a daughter of the late Job Brannon Smith and the late Alpha Shirk Smith.
Leona graduated from Sutton High School and Parkersburg Business School before moving to D.C. for work at the Treasury Department. Shortly after she met and married her husband of 63 years, Lt. Col. Roy Medore DuCharm, USMC, who preceded her in death in 2006.
As an officer's wife, Mrs. DuCharm made a loving home for her family everywhere they lived, San Diego, Vista, Barstow, CA; Fairfax and Sterling, VA, Jacksonville, NC, Kailua, Hawaii and Abington, PA. She was an active volunteer on bases and in communities including, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Election poll volunteer, Thrift Shop faithful, and many others. She was also a loving Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend.
She is survived by her daughter Diane DuCharm, of Leesburg, VA; her brother Ralph Smith of Cleveland, OH; her sister, Patricia Betler of Union, WV; two Grandchildren, Aaron F. Carlson of Harrisburg, PA, and Kelly E. Beasley of Stafford, VA, one Great-Grandchild Caroline, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Leona was predeceased by her son Paul M. DuCharm, and four sisters: Grace Smith, Nola Burns, Valley Queen, and Wanda Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Falcons Landing Memorial Chapel at 10:00 AM.
Graveside services and Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 30, 2009.
