Marcene Reynolds Burgess' Obituary
Mrs. Marcene Reynolds “Marcy” Burgess, 90, of Potomac Falls, VA, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016, of kidney disease.
She was born on February 6, 1926, in Norman, OK. She was the daughter of the late Coy and Carnation (Carrie) Reynolds. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Col. Richard Benton Burgess in 2013, and her brother Tom Reynolds.
She was graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. degree in textiles and clothing. She was a Conover Agency fashion model in New York City and subsequently taught at the Patricia Stevens Modeling School, Marymount College, and the University of Oklahoma. She was later active in the Air Force Officers' Wives Club, and was president of the Club at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, which had 1,132 members. Most memorable during her presidency was when astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, presented scholarships to three high school graduates. She was also active in Protestant Women of the Chapel, and was president of this organization in Nebraska. She was also an avid volunteer with Family Services. She and her husband were members of the Falls Church, where they sang in the "Hallelujah Chorus" along with their son.
She is survived by her daughter Marcene Burgess Block of Athens, GA; her son Dr. John Thompson Burgess of Virginia Beach, VA; grandsons Frank E. Block III of Potomac, MD, Richard Burgess Block of San Francisco, CA, and John Burckhardt Block of Little Rock, AR; and great-grandchildren Eli Michael Block and Vivian Elise Block of Potomac, MD.
Graveside services and interment are to be held privately by the family at Arlington National Cemetery.
