Margaret - a plethora of words come to mind when I say her name.
Family first, Wales, the Pritchard girls, principled, "collector", tea, Jersey girl. Eeyore
I came to know Margaret in the later years of her life as I delivered meals to her on Tuesdays. We regularly had a chat about this or that, exchanged our latest sightings of deer or our resident fox and made plans for a clean-up (which never occurred).
Cosmo would frequently interrupt our conversations. After her move to Morningside,
we continued our meetings. It was a struggle to get her to use her cane or walker or to ask for help when needed. She was inherently independent and so am I. We understood one another. I introduced her to the Monopoly Safeway game. We decided from the beginning we would split the winnings. Every Tuesday, we would check our tickets and add any new matching items. The first year was easy. Zero divided by two equals zero. The second year, winners we were, a grand sum of $10. Margaret and I went on a field trip to the Leesburg Safeway where she completed the forms. They announced her name over the PA system and rang the bell. Margaret was delighted. This past year, we doubled our winnings. Margaret was not quite up to snuff, so on
May 27, the day before the end of the contest, she was waiting for me in the lobby saying she was ready to go. Off we went, oxygen tank and all. Again Margaret completed the forms. They announced, " We have a 94 year old double winner, Margaret Fritz."
I took $ 5.00 and bought scratch off tickets. Margaret said she had never seen them before. So we laughed, as I showed her this game of chance. Tickled pink, off we went
so Margaret could show her winnings to everyone. Larry tagged me with making a gambler of Margaret. Guilty with no regrets. Even at the hospital, we played scratch off tickets. I loved to make her laugh. She once told me I was her friend.
My Friend, thank you for the honor and for all of the joy you brought to my life.
