When I got my schedule for senior year, I went straight to my counselor and tried to get out of Ms. Scholz's class. I had heard she was tough and was mean. Luckily for me, my counselor told me no. Ms. Scholz was one of four teachers in my life that was amazing. Yes, she was tough and expected a lot, but she taught me so much and I loved every minute of her class. I admired and respected her so much. I told her this story at the end of that year, and thanked her for being such a great teacher. She just laughed and gave me a big hug. I really got along with her and was very thankful for the time I was able to soak up as much knowledge as I could.

My name is Alice Beke Thompson. I grew up in Fairfax County and attended James Madison High School in Vienna. I had Miss Scholz for English. She was tough, fair, inspiring, and I loved her. She was one of the main reasons I chose to go to Radford College and become a teacher. I retired 11 years ago after a 30 year teaching career and so often during that time, I thought of Miss Scholz. I was sorry to read in the Roanoke Times of her passing. She was very special to me.

Miss Scholz was my favorite teacher and was truly the best. She challenged me to do my best as she knew of what I was capable and I did my best because I didn't want to disappoint her. She is responsible for my love of Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the ex-patriots such as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein and many others. She's the reason that I am a bonified member of the grammar police. I have her to thank for my success in college. I extend my deepest condolences to Miss Scholz's family. May God's grace comfort each of you in the loss of this most beloved lady.

Fritz, many years have passed since we met but I know how important family was to Barbara. I once met your parents. We lost touch after retirement and JMHS retiree pot lucks but I have many fond memories, especially the 3 summers we shared UVA housing, an apartment, and then a house while we earned our respective M.Ed degrees. I am sorry I did not keep up with her and am even more sorry to learn she died in Inova Fairfax Hospital after an extended illness. Maddie and Gabe became her email address at aol.

Ms. Scholz was one of two of the most influential teachers of my life. All three of my son's know stories of her, she is legendary in our home. Ms. Scholz was so exacting. You either rose to the occasion, or you sat around and complained about her. Maybe you did both. At one of my high school reunions, we all walked down to her room, sat in our very same desks, and shared stories of her. I have been a published writer now for many years because of her. I will always be grateful. Sending so much love your way. I'm so very sorry for your loss. (Lordy, I hope there aren't any spelling or grammatical errors in this!)
