MAX MARTINEZ GUTIERREZ, SR.
August 9, 1932 - October 1, 2010
Max Martinez Gutierrez, Sr., 78, of Leesburg, VA died peacefully on Friday, October 1st, 2010 at INOVA Loudoun Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on August 9, 1932 in El Paso, Texas to the late Juan D. and Luz M. Gutierrez, and spent the majority of his life as a resident of Indio, California. During this time, he worked as a telephone lineman for GTE and retired with 31 years of service yet still found time to be an active supporter of Boy Scout Troop 50. He was also an avid golfer who managed to score a hole-in-one while playing alongside his son Patrick in Oregon. He spent the last few years of his life in Leesburg close to family and friends and was a member in good standing with Leesburg's American Legion Post 181. He is preceded in death by his seven older brothers Juan Jr., Xavier, Ernest, Fernando, Robert, Eugene and Louis, and two older sisters Alice and Mary Lou. His family was directly descended from the First President of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria.
Max was a Korean War-era/Cold War veteran (1952-1954), who served at Camp Hanford in Washington State with B Battery, 83rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion defending America's Plutonium production reactor complex against potential Soviet aerial attack.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Esther C. Gutierrez and his four sons; Max Gutierrez, Jr. and his wife Franzi of Leesburg, VA, Greg Gutierrez of Huntington Beach, CA, Steven Gutierrez and his wife Mary of Dundalk MD, Patrick Gutierrez and his wife Sacha of Baltimore MD, and six grandchildren; Denise, Taylor, Steven Jr., Monika, Alivia and Estelle Gutierrez.
Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 1 PM with military honors.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a donation in Max's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
