MICHAEL DAVID HATHAWAY's Obituary
MICHAEL DAVID HATHAWAY, 86 of Ashburn, Virginia passed to his eternal rest on Sunday, August 27, 2023, surrounded by family.
Born Tuesday, January 5, 1937, Washington, DC, he was the son of the late George Edward and Etta Jeannette Forsythe Hathaway.
Michael served as a Senior Systems Engineer on the Saturn/Apollo Project for manned lunar exploration. Originally assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, he reported directly to Dr. F. Speer under the overall supervision of Dr. Von Braun. Following his service on the space program, he was appointed Director of the House of Representatives Task Force on Energy and Resources, chaired by Representative James McClure who was later elected to the United States Senate. When Senator McClure was elected Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Hathaway was appointed Staff Director for the Committee. He accompanied Senator McClure on several official visits to numerous nations in the Middle East and North Africa. After leaving the Committee he was a candidate for political office in the U. S. House of Representatives and the Maryland State House of Delegates.
Senator Jesse Helms asked Mr. Hathaway to join the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a special investigation involving national elections and Iran. After the investigation, he was appointed Director for International Finance. Upon leaving the Senate staff, Mr. Hathaway became Vice President for E. S. Marks & Company, a financial services firm, and a Partner in the E. S. Marks Investment Bank. He also served as an international consultant on financial and trade concerns with specific interests in energy and natural resource projects.
Most recently he was a teacher at Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia, and Riverside High School in Leesburg, Virginia, teaching math and physics, and was especially dedicated to his students in special education.
Michael leaves his family to cherish his memory including his loving wife Susan Petty Hathaway; his children Michael S. Hathaway, David (Kris) Hathaway, Edward (Maria) Hathaway, and Claire Rose (Caleb) Skeen; his grandchildren, Haley, Lacey, Jesse, Kathryn, Kevin, and Julia; his great grandson Ayden; his sister Susan J. Hathaway; his nephew James Hathaway; and his great nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia J. Gates.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at St. Theresa Catholic Church located at 21371 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, Virginia 20147.
Interment will be held by the family in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
