Dear all, family and friends of Mieke: a little memory from Friesland.
Mieke and her cousin Carrie visited the Netherlands together in July - August 1994;
their Uncle Nick had paid tickets for the them, so they could visit the Dutch Terlaak Poot family and her parents' friends Mieke, Bob and Barbara in Holland. They stayed for a week with their 'tante Loes' (my mom) in the little Frisian village of Ysbrechtum.
My mom had decided that the two girls would stay in my room. When I came home from work for the weekend, my room was a big mess: sneakers, clothes shoes, make up things, suitcases, candybars all over the place. Amidst of the mess were Mieke and Carrie; vividly talking, making fun and having a great time. Of course they went biking, shopping, visiting the places to visit.
One evening, Mieke put on her sneakers after dinner. 'Where are you going?' I asked her. 'Well, I am going jogging', she said. 'Just back and forth to Sneek town!'
I accompanied her - by bike of course - and I was taken by her decisiveness, keeping her focus and smile on during the whole run.
We all had a great time with Mieke and Carrie together.These memories become sweeter, now Mieke has left the world much too early; but they come now with a litte bitterness as well. Mieke's authentic personality, her energy and life positiveness are a source of inspiration for me. Thank you, Mieke, and farewell.
