Mildred L. Savacool's Obituary
Mildred L. Savacool, former YWCA Executive of Washington, DC, died on Sunday, November 18th 2012 in Sterling, VA. She was born on July 9th 1916 in Pottstown, PA; the oldest of five daughters of Lutheran minister the Rev. J.S. and Anna L. Savacool.
Mildred graduated from Wilson College at the age of twenty. After four years as a high school language teacher, she took an interim job with the YWCA, which developed into a lifelong dedication to social service work and the advancement of women. In 1950 she took a master’s degree at Columbia University NY School of Social Work.
She served as Executive Director of the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh from 1961 to 1969 and of the National Capital Area in Washington, D.C., until her retirement in 1981. She attended the World Council of the YWCA in Mexico and in 1967 went to eleven countries with a group of YWCA leaders to study changes taking place in the lives of women.
Upon moving to D.C. in 1969, Mildred became a member of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation and in retirement served as a member of the Congregation Council.
Most recently Mildred resided at Sunrise of Countryside in Sterling VA. She is survived by three sisters Jean S. Barker, Esther S. Wood and Anne M. Savacool, nieces Deborah and Janet Wood, nephews David Wood and Robert McCard, plus numerous grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Sunday, December 16th, at 1:00 PM. Attendees may greet the Savacool family at the Church either before or after the service.
