Olive Marjorie Welch's Obituary
Marjorie Welch of East Lyme, CT, passed quietly in Leesburg, VA on October 22, 2023.
Marjorie was born November 1, 1926 in the farming community of East Lyme, CT to Wilfred and Ruth (Bruce) Scott and was predeceased by her husband Floyd R. Welch, Sisters Esther Duffey, Claire Wheeler and Brothers Bruce Scott and Rev. Allan Scott.
After attending primary school in the East Lyme area, she attended the New London School of Business. Upon graduating business school, Marjorie was joined in marriage to Floyd in a double wedding held in New London, CT [together with Marjorie’s sister Esther and her fiancé Robert Duffy] in November, 1946. The couple eventually settled on the lovely Hickory Lane Farm in East Lyme where they initially raised Guernsey cows. They sold the milk and Floyd worked as a driver for Radway’s Dairy - picking up milk cans at the neighboring farms and delivering them to New London.
Marjorie and Floyd then established Welch & Son Construction, surveying and building road infrastructures, foundations, and drainage systems throughout CT and neighboring states. The team worked on such developments and projects as Laurel Hill and Yale University Outdoor Education Center. Marjorie was the backbone of the business tending to all of the administrative duties that such a business requires.
Marjorie was an avid bird watcher and was very proud of her autographed copy of Bird Field Guide by Roger & Virginia Tory Peterson. She had a gorgeous soprano voice and sang for many years in the Flanders Baptist and Community Church Choir and was a member of the Women’s Circle. She thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings and the Scott family gatherings were notable! She was an ardent naturalist and enjoyed all things outdoors - animals, flowers, birds. And, talk about a bookworm - Marjorie read everything: newspapers, books, encyclopedias, dictionaries. Her favorite authors were Dick Francis and Ogden Nash. And, you better ask her to play Scrabble or Upwards when you came to visit. Be prepared to lose graciously.
Marjorie also served as an officer with both the Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA) and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association for many years. Additionally, she enjoyed serving on various committees for the Tri-State Horse Show Gymkhana Association as her daughter entered her horse into many of the competitions for several years. Marjorie assisted Floyd as he was an active speaker at numerous local schools and VFWs regarding Pearl Harbor. They attended the 50th Pearl Harbor Survivors Memorial Ceremony in Hawaii.
