Obituary for Patricia Marie MacCaffray Patricia Marie MacCaffray passed away peacefully at home in Leesburg, VA, surrounded by her family, on May 14th, 2026. She was born on October 11th, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Raymond and Mary Curry. Patricia lived in Arlington and Alexandria, VA, where she graduated from George Washington High School in 1953.
In 1954, she married Vernon Edwards from Colonial Beach, Virginia, and they had four beautiful children together. Although the marriage didn’t last, they built a lasting family. In 1980, she married Stuart MacCaffray, whom she met while working together in the library at Greenbrier Elementary. They shared many interests, including a love for books and poetry, opera, theater, traveling throughout the U.K., and historical preservation.
Patricia worked for 30 years at the Department of Defense as a protocol officer alongside four-star commands and for the U.S. Army Chief of Staff at the Army Materiel Command (AMC) and the Pentagon. She was awarded the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service from General Wagner in 1989 and a Superior Civilian Service Award from General Tuttle in 1990.
A devoted pet owner, Patricia loved many Corgi and Jack Russell dogs throughout her life. She ventured into breeding Jack Russell Terriers, which included a trip to Ireland to acquire her beloved stud, Harry. Her dogs brought her much joy and happiness. Patricia had an amazing sense of style, always enhanced by curated jewelry and accessories. She valued the effort of a beautifully thought-out garden, an elegant table setting, and a meticulously designed home.
Her greatest pride was her family. Patricia loved hosting family holiday gatherings and creating family traditions. One of her favorite roles in life was that of Granny. She had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom she loved deeply. She offered tremendous support to them in their educational endeavors, sports, music, and theater ventures. Spending time with her grandchildren brought her immense joy. Her family truly was her life and where she found her purpose.
Patricia had a remarkable ability to be there for others in their times of need, offering kind words of encouragement and support. Her life experiences provided her with a wonderful knowledge of etiquette and decorum. She cherished her role as the family’s matriarch, passing down generations of knowledge shared with her. Patricia embraced life with a spirit of strength and love, never losing sight of the importance of being there for the ones you love most.
She is preceded in death by her infant son, Vernon Edwards, and her loving husband, Stuart MacCaffray. She leaves behind her daughters, Cynthia Bauley (Patrick Bauley) and Jennifer Buracker (Gerry Buracker), her son, Brian Edwards (Rita Edwards), her nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Fairfax United Methodist Church, located at 10300 Stratford Ave, Fairfax, VA 22030, on June 12th, 2026, with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. and the service at 1:00 p.m. A private burial will follow.
