Paul Hartmann's Obituary
On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, Paul Hartmann, loving husband, cherished father, and devoted grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 86, surrounded by his wife and two children.
Born in Amityville, NY, he was the son of the late Paul and Emily Hartmann. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Army to serve his country. While in the service, he began his passion for radio technology. After an honorable discharge, he returned to school to learn electronics engineering focusing on air traffic control systems. Building on his studies, he accepted a position with a private company to design, instruct and manage the installation of air traffic control towers throughout allied countries which coincided with his passion to see the world. One of his assignments was in Lima, Peru. There, he met the love of his life and his future wife, Suzette. After a long courtship, they were married. As his contract ended, Paul accepted a position with the Department of the Army as a civilian and moved back to the States with his wife. His new job had them living in various places such as Anchorage, Alaska and Honolulu, Hawaii. They finally settled in Hagerstown, Maryland and together raised their two children.
His work brought him much pride and gave him the opportunity to work in such countries as Germany, Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam, Thailand and Korea. He loved coming home to tell the stories of his work adventures and to share his cultural experiences with his family. He applied self-discipline, personal integrity and a commitment to excellence service to others in his federal career. In this, forty-two year career with the Department of the Army, he received many accommodations; and was awarded the Commander's Award for Civilian Service for his exemplary and unparalleled service to the Army mission. Paul and Suzette retired to Virginia to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Through his life, he was known for his intelligence, quiet demeanor and being detail-oriented. He was a great listener; and occasionally injected his quick wit and made everyone laugh. His kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity were felt by everyone he came in contact with and are the heart of his amazing legacy. He enjoyed “piddling” with his stamp collection and was a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society. He was an avid reader, especially of James Michener novels.
Paul's first and true passion was spending time with his family. He loved being a husband, father and especially a grandfather. He loved attending sporting events and school activities for his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. He was the happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends. He was truly a wonderful family man!
Paul is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Suzette; daughter, Suzette (Andy) Miller; and son, Paul (Jennifer) Hartmann and their beautiful children Isabel and PJ; and adoring nephews and nieces. In addition, he is survived his younger sister, Judith Schubert, and both his sisters' children. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nora Carmen.
Paul will be greatly missed by many, yet we are grateful for his love, support, wisdom, care and influence on all our lives. We will remember him in everything we do and we will carry his love, guidance and wisdom in our hearts so that he will forever be with us. He was one of a kind!
