Paul Carroll Lewis' Obituary
Paul Carroll Lewis, age 56, passed away peacefully on February 14th, 2025, at his home in Sterling, VA. He was the beloved husband of Andrea Sandles.
Born in Taunton, Massachusetts, Paul was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Carroll) Lewis. Paul attended Coyle Cassidy High School in Taunton where he played basketball, ran track and was an all-state cross-country athlete. After high school, Paul attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where he received a degree in mechanical engineering and ran on the cross-country team.
After graduation, Paul moved to the Washington D.C area, where he was employed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner. While at the Patent Office, Paul attended George Washington National Law Center and graduated with a Juris Doctorate.
After receiving his law degree Paul joined the legal firm of Birch Stewart Kolasch & Birch in 1998. Where he eventually rose to the position of partner. His intellectual property practice focused on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, including preparing and filing of new patent applications, preparing amendments, interviews with Examiners, appeal briefs and oral hearings. Paul also had extensive experience with design patents. He was a frequent lecturer for the firm seminar series and regularly lectured in the U.S., Europe and Japan regarding U.S. patent practice and strategies.
Paul enjoyed cooking, collecting baseball cards, growing succulents and had a diverse collection of tropical fish for many years. In his youth, he spent summers in Onset, Massachusetts where he fished, swam, dug clams, boated, and went to the beach. For many years he vacationed near the ocean in various locales as he loved being close to the water. He also enjoyed spending time at his mountain cabin on Bryce Mountain Resort in Basye, Virginia.
Paul is survived by his wife, Andrea Sandles, his loving sons, Seanan Lewis and Aidan Lewis, and his daughter Brianna Lewis. He was the brother of John K. Lewis of Onset, Massachusetts.
Paul’s visitation will be held on Thursday, February 20th, from 4:00 – 7:00pm at the Loudon Funeral Chapel located at 158 Catoctin Circle SE, Leesburg, Virginia 20175. A burial service will be held at 11am on February 21st in the Loudon Funeral Chapel at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in Paul’s memory, which would be deeply appreciated.
