PAUL YOUNG's Obituary
Paul Hammond Young, Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on May 11, 2023 in Leesburg, VA. Paul was born on November 24, 1930 in Cumberland, MD to Arthur and Lenore (Lippold) Young. He graduated from Lasalle High School in Cumberland in 1948 and later earned his degree from Loyola College (now University) in Baltimore in 1959.
At the Newman Center at Loyola, Paul met and fell in love with Kitty Ryan. They were married on November 27, 1952. They lived in Parkville, MD, Carrollton, MD, Huntsville, AL, and Damascus, MD. Kitty passed away in 1998.
Paul served his country in the US Army Security Agency. Following his military service, he began his career at IBM in 1954 and worked there until his retirement in 1992. He was an Executive Manager in Quality Control and also worked on IBM's administrative team for the Space Program in Huntsville from 1968-1972. Paul was one of 55 IBM executives who were "loaned" to work with a university for a year. He worked at Xavier University in New Orleans in 1988/89 where he created a Co-Op Program for minority students. After completing their Co-Op experiences, students returned to school to graduate with job offers. This was Paul's favorite work experience, and he loved working with college students.
Paul was deeply committed to his family. He was a devout Catholic and very active in his Churches, including St. Paul’s in Damascus, MD, St. Agnes in Shepherdstown, WV, and St. Ignatius of Loyola in Orrtanna, PA. Paul’s faith-filled compassionate heart and kind, generous spirit are two things that made him who he was.
Paul loved dancing; and he loved baseball and was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan. He loved everything outdoors, especially the beach and taking long walks in the sand with his children and grandchildren.
After Paul married his second wife, Irene Byrne Neff in October 1999, they moved to Martinsburg, WV. Together they opened an ice cream shop and traveled a lot. Later they moved to Fayetteville, PA.
