"Pete" Fred Lee George's Obituary
FRED LEE “PETE” GEORGE, JR, 75, husband of Susanne Rawlings George, died
peacefully at home July 23, 2006, from complications of diabetes. He was born
February 6, 1931, to the late Fred Lee George and Hypatia Poffenbarger George in
Lovettsville, Virginia. He was a descendant of one of Lovettsville’s oldest families
and a lifelong resident of Lovettsville.
After graduating from Lovettsville High School in 1949, he worked on the farm with
his father, and later worked for the B & O Railroad. He then worked for Pepco,
retiring in 1991 after 30 years service.
He was a member of the St. James United Church of Christ in Lovettsville, the
Lovettsville Lions and the Loyal Order of Moose in Brunswick.
Mr. George was a true sports fan before his physical condition prevented him from
participating actively. In earlier years he coached youth teams and was instrumental
in building two softball fields in Lovettsville before Parks and Recreation became a
separate county commission. He became an avid golfer and was a 25 year member of
Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club in Charles Town, West Virginia.
In addition to his wife of 35 years, Mr. George is survived by three sons; Fred Lee
George, III of Lovettsville, Thomas A. George of Frederick, Md., Charles H. George,
of Brunswick, MD., and one daughter, Jacqueline G. Athey of Lucketts. He is also
Survived by one brother, Henry George and wife Pat of Mt. Airy, Md., two sisters,
Nancy G. and husband Dick Mullen and Hypatia G. and husband George Hawes, all of Lovettsville, and one Aunt, Helen Poffenbarger of Woodsboro, Md. He is the grandfather of Fred Lee George, IV, Reese George, Ashleigh George, Tim George,
Brad George, Joe Athey, Amanda Athey, Erin Murphy and Shannon Murphy.
Mr. George also had three Great Grandchildren, Brittany, Kaitlyn and Fred Lee George,V.
Friends may call at Browns/Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 34 East Broadway, Lovettsville, Friday, July 28 from 2-4 and 7-9.
Services will be held at St. James United Church of Christ on Saturday, July 29 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Don Prange officiating.
Burial follows at Union Cemetery in Lovettsville.
