Ricardo Cobanera's Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ricardo Cobanera, a man of deep generosity and boundless spirit. Ricardo departed this life leaving behind a legacy of passion, beauty, and love that touched all who knew him.
Ricardo was the kind of person who inspired those around him to strive for more—not out of pressure, but through his gentle encouragement and belief in their potential. A natural mentor and guide, he was always ready to lend a hand, offer advice, or ask the type of insightful questions that made people feel truly seen and heard.
A passionate tennis player, Ricardo was a beloved member of the Ida Lee tennis community, where he forged lasting friendships and shared countless matches, laughs, and memories. His love of the sport was matched only by the joy he found in camaraderie and connection.
Music was another deep passion in Ricardo’s life. A gifted pianist, he filled his home with melodies that brought warmth and beauty to every corner. His family fondly remembers returning home to the familiar sound of Ricardo at the piano—music that spoke of joy, beauty, and a profound love of life. He also lent his voice to local chorus groups in Loudoun County and Reston, bringing harmony not only through his singing but through his presence.
Ricardo’s zest for life found expression in travel. Alongside his cherished wife Marina and beloved daughter Pilar, he explored the world—European cities rich with history, the vibrant landscapes of Southeast Asia with his tennis companions, sunny summer vacations with his children Eugenia and Felipe and grandchildren, and, in a particularly meaningful journey, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which he completed alone in 2024. Each adventure was not only a journey through geography but through culture, connection, and spirit.
At home, Ricardo found solace and satisfaction in his garden, lovingly tending to his roses, geraniums, and gardenias. He was well-loved by his neighbors, with whom he often exchanged gardening tips and friendly conversation. His care for nature mirrored his care for people—caring, nurturing, and unwavering.
A thoughtful and deeply spiritual man, Ricardo was a devoted Christian who engaged passionately in discussions of philosophy, ethics, and faith. His conversations were never superficial; he sought truth, depth, and understanding, always with respect for the perspectives of others. Ricardo carried a deep sense of duty to his legacy, dedicating countless hours to researching his genealogy and understanding the roots of his family history—a journey that deepened his appreciation for the generations that came before him and the legacy he hoped to leave behind.
Ricardo Cobanera leaves behind a community of family, friends, and mentees who will carry forward his legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, and faith. He showed us how to live fully, love deeply, and always strive for higher ground—not only for ourselves but for one another.
He will be dearly missed, but his light endures in the lives he touched, the music he played, and the love he gave so freely.
