Richard Carroll Sullivan's Obituary
Richard (Dick) Carroll Sullivan, Leesburg, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on July 13, 2023.
Dick was born on March 8, 1933, and was a lifelong Virginia resident committed to volunteering in the communities where he lived. He spent his childhood in Arlington and married life in Vienna, Fairfax, Mt. Holly, Lovettsville and Leesburg, with a short time in Laurel, MD. He graduated from Washington and Lee High School in 1951 and earned a degree in pharmacy in 1956 from George Washington University. Dick and his wife Jeanie met in college, married in 1957 and enjoyed a happy marriage of sixty-six years.
Dick was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church. He participated in many volunteer roles within the church such as lay ministry, committee leadership and always sang in the choir. Dick enjoyed his children’s activities and coached little league baseball with his brother Charlie.
Dick was drafted to the U.S. Army and served two years as a Specialist in 1956-58. Dick enjoyed a long career as a pharmacist – first by opening Sullivan’s Arlington Forrest Pharmacy with his brother Dean followed by one year with Geigy Corporation in pharmaceutical sales, a pharmacist and district manager for People’s Drug and a pharmacist for Giant Pharmacy where he retired in 1995. Dick enjoyed golf in his retirement. His granddaughters were the light of his retirement years.
Dick was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Dick’s parents were deaf, and he supported them throughout his adult life. Family and friendship were his top priorities. Dick was known to pick up the phone and call you. If you did not pick up, you were guaranteed an entertaining voicemail. Staying in touch and treating people well were his hallmark qualities. He will be greatly missed.
