Capt. Robert "Greg" DiMuzio USN (Ret.)'s Obituary
On the evening of Monday, April 13, 2026 Captain R. Greg DiMuzio, US Navy (Ret.), a longtime resident of Ashburn, Virginia passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness. Greg had a sharp wit, natural inquisitiveness, and a deep love of reading that he passed along to his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as an insightful listener, engaging storyteller, and caring father, grandfather, and brother.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Linda, and a beautiful family legacy with 5 daughters & 13 grandchildren - Elizabeth & Sean (Anabelle, Caroline), Erin & Brian (Hudson, Beckett, Lucy), Bernadette & Graham (Henry, Isaac, Miles, Quinn), Monica, and Victoria & Grant (Declan, Cohen, Betty, Eleanor).
Greg was born May 1, 1944 in Covington, Kentucky. The eldest of 10 children, Greg spent the majority of his youth in Delhi Township in Cincinnati, Ohio, where to this day he maintains lifelong friends and family members. He was the son of the late William V. DiMuzio and the late Ruth Mary O’Malley DiMuzio. Greg attended St. Dominic Grade School followed by Elder High School. After finishing college at Xavier University, he began his Naval career. As a cryptology officer in the Navy, no one knows exactly what he did, but he learned Russian and studied Russian military history.
While traveling the world to duty stations from Hawaii to Japan, Greg eventually found himself in Rota, Spain where a chance medical encounter with a beautiful corpsman resulted in a blind date with Linda. They were married in a small Catholic Church named Nuestra Señora de la "O". Each one of their daughters would be born in a different country or state during his time in the Navy. From glass-bottomed boat rides in the Philippines to home stays in Japan, Greg showed his family the world. Greg retired as a Captain in 1995 and moved the family outside of Washington, D.C. to begin civilian life as a contractor for the federal government. He also served as a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Ashburn, Virginia.
Greg was active in his retirement and relished exploring and learning new things. He enjoyed bird watching with a cup of coffee most mornings out on the deck and tending to his backyard vegetable garden. He took wood turning classes to learn to make pens and other trinkets. In his later years he earned his amateur radio license for HAM radio and spent afternoons experimenting with antennas and signals to connect globally with other users (usually fellow retired cryptologists). His favorite recliner served as a lending library and he loved to talk about books; military history, biographies and philosophy were his favorites.
Throughout his eight year battle with an aggressive form of Parkinson’s, he taught everyone he encountered what it meant to suffer joyfully. We will miss his banter over the merits of classical versus modern pianists and his highbrow critiques of the baked goods his daughters made. We will miss listening to his Oscar-worthy dramatic readings of books to his grandchildren. We loved him dearly.
The DiMuzio family will receive guests on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 12:30 PM to 1:10 PM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, 21371 St. Theresa Lane Ashburn, VA 20147.
