Robert Frederick Dunkin's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Frederick Dunkin, 96, of Ashburn, VA, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024.
Bob was born on December 3, 1927, in Denver, Colorado. He was the son of the late Robert Frederick Dunkin and the late Margaret Hanson. He was the husband of Cheryl Diane Dunkin and a resident of Ashby Ponds.
Bob grew up in Albia, Iowa and received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
Shortly after, he relocated to Moline, Illinois and began his family. Fond memories of his children include time spent outdoors, fishing and visiting Bethany Beach.
Bob spent much of his career working in the Federal Services Division of IBM. After retiring in 1988, he found his true passion working part time as an Event Coordinator for IEEE. This spawned his love of travel – especially international travel!
Bob met and married Cheryl Diane Judd in Gaithersburg, MD, in October of 2000. They had a great life together where they enjoyed traveling, volunteering at Hospice, playing golf and becoming snowbirds for many, many years in Ft. Pierce, Florida.
When not traveling, they very much enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. Bob passed on his love of fishing, golf and Bethany Beach to them as well. He was a regular spectator at various sporting and equestrian events and was an avid fan of the Washington Nationals – rarely missing a game in his later years! He may have also been known to slip cash in the hands of grandchildren as “walking around” money.
In February of 2021, Bob and Cheryl moved to Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Loudoun County, VA. While there, they made many new friends and participated in Bocci and Shuffleboard leagues as well as many other social and physical activities.
Bob leaves many to cherish his memory including his wife of 23 years, Cheryl Diane Dunkin; daughter, Susan (Linwood) Orenduff; sons Christopher Dunkin and John (Kay) Dunkin; stepdaughters Kelli Orrison and Angi Ackerman; grandsons Nicholas (Ymelda) Orenduff and Zack (Gabby) Dunkin; granddaughter Heather (Chris) Tippery; step-grandsons Aaron Orrison, Brady Orrison, Chase Ackerman and Mason Ackerman; great-granddaughters Valentina Orenduff, Isabella Orenduff and Fiona Dunkin.
A private memorial service will be held in the spring.
