Robert E. Gildersleeve's Obituary
Robert Edward Gildersleeve, Jr.,71, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017, in Leesburg, Virginia.
He was born in Texas and grew up in Japan and Greece, graduating from the American International School of Thessaloniki. He attended college at Loyola in New Orleans and Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He was an intelligence officer in the United States Army, serving in the Berlin Brigade and in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Major and continuing his service through the Reserves and National Guard. After leaving fulltime military service he was a CIA Analyst for many years and upon retirement from the Agency worked as a private contractor in the national defense field. Throughout his career he received numerous commendations and awards, including the Bronze Star.
Bob maintained a lifelong passion for collecting coins, stamps and Japanese swords and deeply loved his family ranch in Texas. He was a voracious reader and student of history and politics, possessing a wonderful enthusiasm for a wide array of subjects. He was also a gifted artist and photographer. His wit was sharp and his heart was generous.
Beloved husband of Alice Free Gildersleeve. Loving father of Becky Gildersleeve and father-in-law of Sebastian Geuens.
Services and interment to be held privately by the family.
