To Nancy and Family: The photograph of Robert, or as we knew him in high school days, Bob, truly captures the spirit of the man. That is the smile and the brightness of eye that I associate with him. So often that smile of his was playful, for a bit of humor and wit was about to emerge. Robert was always 'there' in conversation, leaning in, wanting to hear, wanting to learn, wanting to engage. Of course one of the obvious things about him was his brilliance, ...one smart guy, applying it in engineering as a 'boiler-maker' at Purdue, and then connecting the technical and business sides tightly, all the while maintaining his avocational dedication to music, which he loved. My fond recollections include times together on the basketball court, watching he and other classmates in school plays, and just the day-to-day 'messing around' that personifies high school. Specific memories include how he would insert 'the Bucs are going all the way' into any piece he played on the piano; playing his unique version of the "Old Rugged Cross Rock"; composing the Upper St. Clair High School Alma Mater; teasing Ruth Bayley, when she kindly offered us cake on a sudden drop-in at her house (to see Toni and Sue), by saying he only ate cake with ice cream (and suddenly the ice cream would appear); on lazy summer days tying his towel to the antenna of his car and driving back and forth in front of Hawkins's house until Mrs. Hawkins would invite him in for a swim; telling me when I returned from northern Canada, where I worked in isolation for 3 months doing geology, that I resembled a combination of Bat Masterson and John Wilkes Booth! It goes on an on. But throughout all this apparent craziness there was never a doubt in anyone's mind that Robert/Bob had his act together, was serious and directed at the core; set visibly high goals for himself that rubbed off on how many of us would look at life; and always took interest in others. Perhaps above all he was an excellent communicator and conversationalist from 'day 1', and undoubtedly this characteristic and talent was key in everything that he accomplished. We miss him already, and extend our prayerful love to Nancy and his family. George and Merrily Davis, Tucson, AZ
