Robert Frederick Montgomery Jr.'s Obituary
Robert Frederick Montgomery, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, in Leesburg, Virginia, at the age of 78.
Born on October 18, 1947, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Robert Frederick Montgomery and Katharine Grier Linton Montgomery. His early years were spent in Washington, DC until they moved to Pageland Farm in Casanova, Virginia.
Mr. Montgomery graduated from Fauquier High School in 1965 and earned a bachelor's degree from George Mason College of the University of Virginia in May 1969. He later received a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University.
He began his career with the Virginia State Health Department in August 1969 before enlisting in the United States Army in January 1970. Following his military service, he devoted more than 30 years to Loudoun County Government, serving in the Health Department, the Office of Solid Waste Management, and finally as Director of Animal Care and Control. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his integrity, sound judgment, and steadfast commitment to public service.
Following his retirement from county government, Mr. Montgomery assumed responsibility for the family business, Montgomery Shade & Awning, founded by his father, which he owned and operated for the past 25 years.
In his youth, Mr. Montgomery enjoyed horseback riding, fox hunting, and driving his Pontiac Firebird through the back roads of Fauquier County. He remained an enthusiastic outdoorsman throughout his life, taking great pride in his garden, particularly his tomatoes, and enjoyed many fishing trips with the Albatross Fleet in Hatteras. Few things made him happier than feeling the sand beneath his feet while casting a fishing rod into the surf or sitting quietly with a book in hand.
A Virginia gentleman in every sense, he was known for his impeccable manners, quiet humility, and unwavering integrity. He believed that one's word should be kept, that service was an obligation, and that every person deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife, Janet Montgomery; his children, Jennifer Montgomery (Chris Stephenson), Brian Montgomery, and Betsy Payne (Jeremy); and his grandchildren, Grayson and Grier Stephenson and Porter and Brooks Payne. He is also survived by his sister, Katharine Montgomery Gregory (Gene); his brother, Gary Montgomery (Michelle); his aunt, Rachel Molinari; and numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Bluemont Station in Bluemont, Virginia.
