Robert John Schultz's Obituary
ROBERT JOHN SCHULTZ of Ocean Pines, MD, passed away on December 4, 2024, at the age of 80.
Born on April 19, 1944, in Detroit, MI, to John P. Schultz and Roberta May Schultz, nee Wolfe, Robert's life was marked by love and service. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Roger Schultz, and his first wife, Alice Irene Schultz, nee Bendure.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Elizabeth Schultz, nee Lamphere; his loving children, Jennifer Lynn Schultz (Taylor) and Kenneth Robert Schultz (Colleen Mary); his stepchildren, Alison Jennifer Mocko and Andrew Philip Smith; and his cherished grandchildren: Madison Hope Taylor, Chloe Alice Schultz, Mia Carolyn Schultz, Matthew Kenneth Schultz, Sarah Elizabeth Mocko, Nicholas Tesla Mocko, Twila June Smith, and Kendra Ann Smith, along with his great-granddaughter, Emily Hope Taylor, who filled his heart with joy.
Robert achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1966 from Wayne State University. He continued his journey at Temple University in Philadelphia, serving as a teaching and research assistant, before achieving his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemistry from Brown University in March 1971.
With an unwavering commitment to his field, Robert completed post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan and made significant contributions as a synthetic medicinal chemist for Starks Associates, a contractor for the National Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. His career flourished after transferring to Gaithersburg, MD, where he continued to make strides in drug synthesis and eventually retired from the National Cancer Institute in April 2006.
Robert's passions included going on cruises with his wife, Karen, annual fishing trips with his brother Roger on Lake Huron, and the joy of spending time with his family, especially his great-granddaughter Emily, the light of his life.
A dedicated community member, Robert volunteered at Atlantic General Hospital, engaged in the Ocean Pines bowling league, and was an active participant at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ocean City, MD, where he served on the church council and contributed to the senior adult ministry.
A memorial service will be held on January 4, 2025, at 11am with a visitation starting at 10am at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church located at 10301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD 21842.
A reception is to follow immediately after service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
