Robert T. Wallace, a retired executive of what is now Peabody Energy in St. Louis, Missouri and a former Department of Urban Development appointee, died on June 8 at his home in Falcons’ Landing. He was 81.
Mr. Wallace joined Peabody in 1977, and served as Senior Vice President for Corporate Development. A member of the firm’s Executive Committee, his responsibilities included strategic planning, research and technology, as well as operation of three Peabody subsidiaries. Prior to his time with Peabody, he served in the Federal Government, as an Appointee in the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Ford administration, and prior to that as a Senior Associate in the Office of Management and Budget. Mr. Wallace’s early career was spent in the aerospace and defense industry, where he worked for RCA on several notable projects, including NASA’s Apollo program and missile detection systems. Mr. Wallace spent several years with Computer Sciences Corporation, both domestically and abroad. Prior to working in the private sector, Mr. Wallace served in the Air Force, where he eventually attained the rank of Colonel in the Air Force Reserves. Mr. Wallace graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1954; he subsequently completed the first PMD program at Harvard University in 1959.
An enthusiastic resident of Falcons’ Landing since 2010, Mr. Wallace participated in many theatrical productions and was proud to volunteer in the “Meals on Wheels” program for Falcons Landing, delivering meals to home-bound local residents.
A native of New York City, Mr. Wallace developed a lifelong love of baseball as a boy cheering for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He is survived by Mildred, his beloved wife of fifty four years, his four sons, Jonathan, Matthew, Joseph and Robert, and his nine grandchildren, for whom he will always remain their loving “Papa”.
A memorial mass will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Falcons Landing Memorial Chapel. The Mass will be followed by a reception with appetizers and refreshments also at Falcons Landing.
