Rollin Franklin Nelson's Obituary
Rollin (Ron) Franklin Nelson: Died on Monday, February 21, 2022 after an eventful well-lived 91 year long life. He was born is San Francisco, California and lived with his family in Madison, Wisconsin during his early childhood and the Great Depression. He became a lifelong fan of the University of Wisconsin where his older brother graduated. During World War II, he followed his father and World War I veteran’s call to serve as a Civil Servant with the Department of the Navy and he became a resident of Washington, DC. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in NW DC. He went on to honorably serve in the United States Air Force in the Korean War. Upon returning to DC he attended American University and began a 30-year career as a Civil Service worker with the Department of the Interior and the USGS in Reston eventually settling down in Herndon, VA in 1975. After retiring from the federal government in 1986, he began a second career as a FCPS bus driver before fully retiring in the early 2000s. He was married to his beloved wife Jean D. Asbury for 58-years until her death in June, 2020. He loved to bass fish and was a charter member of the National Capital Bass Club and a member of the Isaak Walton League. His other passion was sports and coaching his son’s baseball and football teams. He also enjoyed golf and watching the local DC professional sports teams. He is survived by his two sons and two daughters, 6 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Wounded Warrior’s Project.
