Ronald Morris Phillips' Obituary
RONALD MORRIS PHILLIPS, 91, of Ashburn, VA, passed on March 6, 2026. Ron lived a life of service, quiet dignity, and complete dedication to his wife and family. Ron was born on September 1, 1934, in North Hampton, PA, to David and Josephine Phillips. He is preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Marie Estelle Phillips. Ronald is survived by his three sons; Lee Phillips (Kim), Tod Phillips (Tracy), and Matt Phillips (Kate); five grandchildren; Molly Godfrey (Matt), Mitch Phillips, Josephine Phillips, Olivia Phillips, and Benjamin Phillips; as well as two great-grandchildren, Anna Godfrey and Julia Godfrey.
Ron graduated from North Hampton High School in 1953 and attended Ohio University on a football scholarship.
His Naval career began in 1955, and with his successful completion of the NavCad program, he became a Naval Officer and Aviator. His Naval career led him to several deployments, including a tour in Vietnam, a Jet instructor in Corpus Christi, TX, and finally the Joint Chiefs of Staff. When asked, his proudest moment was becoming the Commanding Officer of VAW 121. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal w/Strike/Flight Number 3, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” and Gold Star for heroic achievement/service in combat, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon for outstanding heroism in combat, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. He retired from the Navy in 1981 as a Captain.
After leaving the Navy, he went back to college and received his bachelor’s degree in finance from George Mason University. Ron then began his second 12-year career as the Fairfax County Director of Emergency Services, which included developing and implementing the Fairfax County Emergency Response Guide.
Upon his final retirement, Ron devoted much of his time to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ron played softball in the Fairfax County Men’s League for 20 years. He also served for many years as a docent at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Additionally, he and his beloved wife, Marie, enjoyed frequent travel with friends. In the last several years Ron enjoyed playing in the Bocce Ball league at Ashby Ponds.
A celebration of his life will be held at Farmwell Hall in Ashby Ponds on May 17th from 10 – 12:30 PM. A private burial service for Ronald will take place at Arlington National Cemetery. Please share condolences with the family at https://www.LoudounFuneralChapel.com.
