Shauneequa was more than just my “Big Sister” — she was one of the greatest blessings God ever placed in my life.
I remember my mom telling me she was signing me up for a mentor program and that I was going to be matched with a big sister to help guide me through the hard times I was facing. I was only 11 years old, and I honestly didn’t care. I remember thinking, what can someone I don’t even know possibly do for me? I had no idea that this stranger was about to become one of the most important people in my life.
From the moment Shauneequa stepped into my world, everything started to change. She didn’t just “mentor” me — she loved me. She saw me. She listened to me. During a time when I was struggling deeply with depression, she became my safe place. She made life feel worth living again. She reminded me that I mattered. She poured into me in ways that I didn’t even realize I needed.
She kept me motivated when I wanted to give up. She showed up — consistently. She celebrated every milestone, every accomplishment, every step forward I made. She never made me feel like I was too much or not enough. She made me feel important. She made me feel chosen.
Even when she moved away from Georgia, distance never changed our bond. We stayed in touch. She would send me pictures of her beautiful baby boys, and I loved seeing her step into motherhood. No matter where life took us, she was always my big sister.
It breaks my heart that she is gone. Some days it still doesn’t feel real. The world lost an incredible woman, but I lost someone who helped shape me into who I am today. A piece of my story will always have her name written in it.
I will forever be grateful that 11-year-old me was wrong — because the person I “didn’t know” ended up changing my life in the most beautiful way.
I love you always, Shauneequa. Thank you for choosing me. 🤍
