OBITUARY INFORMATION
CDR, USN Ret. SHERMAN HENRY OWENS, 71, of Sterling, Virginia since 1981 died on Wednesday June 7, 2006 in Alexandria, Virginia.
CDR, Owens is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years Mrs. Lily L. Owens of Sterling, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends may call on Friday June 16, 2006 at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle Leesburg, VA from 5-7pm with Funeral Services to begin at 7:00pm with Rev.
Graveside services will be held with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at 3:00pm on Wednesday August 16, 2006. Friends wishing to attend should arrive at the administration building on the grounds of Arlington Cemetery by 2:30PM.
CDR, Owens was born December 3, 1934 in Elyria, Ohio to the late Wheeler H. and Sallye Dodson Owens. He grew up in Blue Ash, Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater degree in 1956 from Ohio University. After graduating from OCS he was commissioned into the U.S. Navy in 1957. During his service in the Navy he served in surface warfare assignments in commands operating in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediteranean areas on board the, USS Jonas Ingram (DD938) as Chief Engineer, USS Stalwart (MSO493) as Executive Officer, USS Massey (DD778) as Executive Officer, USS Austin (LPD-4) as Executive Officer. He received among other campaign and service medals a personal award, the Defense Superior Service Award with First Oak Leaf Cluster. CDR, Owens received a MS in International Affairs from George Washington University and graduated from the Naval War College, School of Navy Command and Staff, Newport, Rhode Island in 1970. After 26 years of service he retired in 1983 from the Navy and continued to serve his country as a consultant with the State Department. He was also the owner/operator of Solo House Realty, Sterling, Virginia.
