Stephen Jude D'Elia's Obituary
Stephen D’Elia of Lovettsville & Round Hill, Va. died March 19, 2012 at INOVA Loudoun Hospital. He was born Feb 16, 1935 in Evanston, Illinois and lived all of his childhood in Chicago. He received his Bachelor of Philosophy from DePaul University and a Master of Science in Education from Chicago State University.
He served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator from 1957-1959. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador. Throughout his career he was a school librarian in Illinois, Maryland and Virginia. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a school librarian at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, VA and at St. James School in Falls Church. He volunteered as a docent for the Library of Congress and taught English as a second language.
He was the eldest of three children of the late Henry Clement D’Elia and the late Aileen Margaret Curran. He married Lois Butts in December of 1960 and they celebrated 51 years of marriage. He is the father of Anthony (Orfa), Joan (Scott Burford), Mary Mowe (Roddy), Ruth Ann Jewell (Randy), Rosa Pendleton, Phillip, George, Manuel, Paul (Stephanie Payne), Michael (Janine), Matthew. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister (Mary Heidkamp) and sister (Patricia D’Elia) and infant son, Andrew.
He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church since 1974 and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Until his death, he remained an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
The viewing will be held on Thurs March 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis de Sales, on Fri March 23 at 9 a.m. Interment will be held privately in St. John’s Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the purpose of offering Masses for the repose of his immortal soul, or donations to the building fund of St. Francis de Sales, 37700 St. Francis Circle Purcellville, VA, US
