Steven Middleton's Obituary
Our bright, wonderful son and brother passed away August 30th, 2020. Steven was the younger of two children, one of twelve cousins, nephew to eight aunts and uncles, grandson and loving caretaker of two cats, two dogs and various other critters over the years. Steven had fantastic wit, a great laugh and smile, intelligence, academic ability, and many wonderful friendships. Steven also had difficulties that he battled with hope and resilience, while helping others facing similar challenges. We loved Steven with all of our hearts, but that was not enough to protect him from a deadly disease. Steven is gone and we will never be the same again.
Steven was an avid reader – he loved fiction mythology/fantasy, thrillers, and Calvin & Hobbes. As Steven would say when asked why he liked to read - reading takes you to different places, different worlds, you can go anywhere with a book. Steven had fun camping, hiking, fishing, bowling, playing in-line hockey and baseball. He recently tried rock climbing and yoga – we’ll let you guess which got a thumbs-up and which got a thumbs-down. He was born and raised in Northern Virginia, and his favorite teams were the Capitals, Orioles, Nationals and the Redskins.
Steven was an independent thinker, gathering information and forming his own opinions. We came to appreciate his critical thinking and negotiating skills, even his tendency to challenge instead of just doing what he was told “because we said so!” What great qualities to have! And what a gift to help us appreciate the many differences that make people unique. We’re better parents and friends thanks to him.
Friends may call at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, VA from 12:30-2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 with a service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – www.nami.org, or A Forever Home Rescue Foundation - https://www.aforeverhome.org, an organization Steven supported through volunteer work, helping to foster puppies, and caring for our adopted family members.
