Sultan “Mo” Mohammed
July 8, 1943 – July 13, 2026
Sultan Mohammed, affectionately known as “Mo” by his family and friends, was born on July 8, 1943, in San Fernando, Trinidad, West Indies, to the late Peer and Batulan Mohammed.
At the age of 21, Mo immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities and a better life. Through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to education, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and later received a master’s degree in Biochemistry from Howard University.
While attending night school at Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C., Mo met the love of his life, Thelma Wesley. Their meeting marked the beginning of a beautiful journey together, and they shared more than 57 years of love, devotion, and partnership.
Mo was a true people person with a quick wit and a wicked sense of humor that could brighten anyone’s day. Although his education prepared him for a career in science, his outgoing personality made the corporate world a poor fit. Instead, he found his calling driving taxicabs, where every fare became an opportunity to connect with others. It was often said that when you stepped into Mo’s cab, you entered as a passenger but left as a friend. He had an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued.
Throughout his life, Mo embraced many unique experiences. He once worked in a jewelry store alongside Goldie Hawn’s mother and knew Goldie when she was a young girl. Ever curious and adventurous, he also became a licensed private investigator, adding another fascinating chapter to his remarkable life.
Above all else, Mo was devoted to his family. He was generous beyond measure, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He faithfully supported his family in Trinidad by sending money home and demonstrated his selflessness by giving his home to his brother. His kindness, generosity, and deep love for his family defined the man he was.
Mo’s legacy is one of compassion, laughter, resilience, and unwavering love. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and the countless lives he touched through simple acts of kindness.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife of more than 57 years, Thelma Mohammed; his daughter, Erica Beard; his stepson, Eric Wesley (Rosezeata); his granddaughter, Withney Williams; his grandson, Kenneth Beard; his brothers, Hakim, Nazim, and Wazir Mohammed; his sister, Sheridan Santokie; Brother in laws, Lloyd, Stanley, and Leon Wesley, and Daniel Coles. Sister in laws, Jean Beverly, Zelda Coles, Alicetine Walker, and Rosa, Gertrude, and Venus Wesley; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.
Though he has departed this earthly life, Mo’s warmth, generosity, laughter, and enduring love will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, the importance of family, and the lasting impact one person can have on the lives of others.
As we remember and celebrate Mo’s remarkable journey, we hold close the words of Scripture:
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master.” — Matthew 25:23
May his memory continue to bring comfort and inspiration, and may the love he shared live on through the generations who were blessed to know him.
