Susan "Sally" Marie Darr's Obituary
Susan (Sally) M. Darr passed away peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2014. She was born in Masontown, PA on July 4th, 1927, the daughter of the late Rade Joseph Standish and the late Ana Marie Gostovic Standish. She was married to William (Bill) Holmes Darr for nearly 54 years. He preceded her in death along with her siblings Nicholas Standish, George Standish, Doris Standish Plisko, Eli Standish and nephew David Plisko.
She is survived by her 3 children: Nancy A (R. Bruce) Donaldson, Kathy L Darr, William R. (Leslie) Darr, all of Ashburn, VA & a sister, Jean Standish Mullen of Cumberland, MD. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Ryan Comeau, Chase (Susan) Comeau, Robert Donaldson, Nicholas Darr, Johnathan Darr, Samantha Darr, Alexander “AJ” Darr and one Great-Grandchild Nathalie Comeau, two Step Great-Grandchildren as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
At the end of her high school senior year she was selected for an exclusive FBI program, requiring her to relocate to Washington D.C. where she worked as personal secretary to then Special Agent Cartha “Deke” Deloch. She also attended classes at American University & Strayers Business College. Later she returned home to assist with the care of her mother and married Bill (Spider) Darr in 1954.
Their life together started at Sheppard Air Force Base, TX. They moved to Miami, FL then NYC for Bill’s employment with Eastern Airlines. They returned to the Washington DC area, where for 12 years Sally was employed as the director for Hunter Mill Country Day School, Oakton, VA. She was very active in her community of Brookfield in Chantilly, VA: a member of the HOA, PTA, Christ Presbyterian Church. Sally acted as chairperson to raise funds for a new ambulance for the Chantilly Volunteer Fire Station. During these days she and her husband enjoyed traveling, dancing and going to community parties. In the late 1970’s they lived in the boating community of Lake St. Louis, MO. After moving back to Herndon, VA she worked for Verizon for 10 years then retired & moved to Charles Town, WV. Not one to sit back & enjoy retirement she later volunteered for Meals on Wheels & Jefferson Co Community Ministries, in Charles Town, WV.
With her children grown, she then joined her husband at his various international posts where they lived in Athens, Greece, Shepshed, England and Malahide, Ireland. During this time they also traveled through much of Europe including the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, France, and Austria.
In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her family & with her many friends at Meadow Glen of Leesburg, VA where she enjoyed reading, shopping & playing Bingo. She leaves behind a large number of friends, who along with us all, will cherish her memory forever.
The family will be receiving on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, S.E., Leesburg, VA 20175. A Christian service will be held at Loudoun Funeral Chapel at 11am on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Interment will immediately follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Hamilton, VA
