Swithern Edward Howard Lloyd Sr.'s Obituary
Swithern Edward Howard Lloyd, 72, known affectionately as “Puddin”, passed away at the homeplace of his birth in Middleburg, VA on Friday, January 24, 2025. He was born on Saturday, May 24, 1952 to the late Swithern Stevenson Lloyd and Mildred Williams Lloyd.
Swithern attended Douglass High School in Leesburg, VA prior to school desegregation in Loudoun County and, afterward, graduated from Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, VA, class of 1970. He attended Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA where he met many wonderful friends who remained his friends for life. He majored in Industrial Arts Education and was a talented woodworker. If Puddin needed a piece of furniture, some place to store pots & pans or some extra pantry space, he would build it himself.
Swithern met Wilma Elizabeth Brown while at Virginia State and they were married in 1981. Swithern and Wilma had one son, Swithern Edward Howard Lloyd Jr in 1984. The family settled in Berryville, VA where he worked for the Clarke County Public School's Maintenance Department for many years. Prior to moving to Berryville, Swithern worked in the Richmond, VA area for the Virginia Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer.
Although the family eventually separated, Swithern and Wilma maintained a mutually respectful relationship due in part to the love they shared for their son. Swithern met a longtime friend in Cookie Woodruff while living in Berryville. They shared a love of Yorkshire Terriers. He will be remembered for the several little Yorkies they had over the years. Tigger, Diamond, Sweet Pea, Baby and Symba. The dogs were always friendly and playful with everyone. Symba loved going on trips and would start barking with excitement at the mere mention of going somewhere with his “Dad.”
Among the things that made Puddin happy was the open water. He loved the open water and taking fishing trips with his friends. His final wish was to have his ashes scattered on the water.
He also loved bird watching and often referred to a book he had that identified the birds he saw feeding on his deck. He loved gardening and watching nature shows, Hawaii Five O and NCIS. He loved everything to do with the Washington Commanders and he departed for Heaven with the excitement that they might go to the Super Bowl this year. God spared him the disappointment of that last playoff game.
Swithern was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother Arthur Stevenson Lloyd and sister Mary Lloyd Jackson. He is survived by his loving family including his son Swithern Lloyd Jr. of Richmond, VA, his sister Mildred Lloyd of Silver Spring, MD and her loving friend Richard Smith of North Potomac, MD, his sister-in-law Shirley Lloyd of Leesburg, nephew Brian Lloyd and niece Maria Lloyd of Middleburg, great-nieces Bria Lloyd, Rayna Lloyd and Nya Lloyd of Middleburg, devoted cousins Randy Lloyd and Howard “Pete” Lloyd of Middleburg, Albert and Andrea Smith of Sterling, Henry Julius of Millwood as well as many other dear family and friends.
