Thomas Barkley Wood's Obituary
Capt. Thomas Barkley Wood, USN (Ret.), 88, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2015.
Devoted husband, father, grandfather and great American patriot, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy Stenzel Wood, of Ashburn, VA, three children, Brian (Terrise), Alison, and Eric (Nancy Orloff), and six grandchildren.
Born March 1, 1927 in Joplin, Missouri, the son of Tom Barkley Wood and Ellen Bell Ezzell, “Barkley” grew up in Big Spring, Texas. An Eagle Scout, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, flying numerous missions in the F9F-Panther in Korea, later the F-4U Corsair, F9F-Cougar, A-3D Skywarrior, and commanded an RA-5C Vigilante squadron (RVAH-12) based in Sanford, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation (Class of '49).
A celebration of his life will be held at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia, and a funeral service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery later in the year.
