Thomas "Dan" Lutman's Obituary
Thomas Daniel “Dan” Lutman, 76 of Lovettsville, VA died on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born Tuesday, May 1, 1934 in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late William Claude Lutman and the late Sarah Virginia Vanpelt. Dan was raised in Brunswick, and was a graduate of Brunswick High School, class of 1952. In 1955, he married his wife of 55 years, Adelaide “Tillie”Enfield Lutman. He also completed training as a diesel mechanic in 1955 in St. Louis, MO. Upon completion of his training he was employed by the Frederick Motor Co in Frederick, MD until he was drafted by the US Army in 1956. He served two years active duty overseas in France. Upon his return to the states he returned to work for the Frederick Motor Co.
In 1960 he left the Frederick Motor Co. to take over managing the family farm in Lovettsville, VA following the death of his brother, William David Lutman.
In 1971 he returned to his chosen profession as a truck mechanic full time when he went to work for Loudoun Truck Center in Purcellville, VA while continuing to maintain the family farm. During his 11 year career at Loudoun Truck he progressed to the level of shop foreman. In 1982 he went to work for Sheets Wholesale, Inc. in Sterling, VA maintaining a fleet of 25 vehicles until his retirement in 1999.
Dan had a love of restoring and showing antique trucks and tractors. He was a member of ATHS American Truck Historical Society.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Tommy Lutman & daughter in law Sue of Lovettsville, VA, Jeff Lutman & daughter in law Kathy of Lovettsville, VA, his daughter, Sara "Sally" Harver & son in law Barry of Aspers, PA; 3 grandchildren, Jackie, Ryan and Chris; 1 great grandchild, William; two nieces and a nephew.
A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church located at 11791 Mountain Road Lovettsville, Virginia 20180 with the Pastor Lee Crosby officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet United Methodist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at Brown-Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 34 East Broad Way, Lovettsville, Virginia.
