I am blessed to have both a birth family and a chosen family. On behalf of my birth family, I send deep condolences and much love to you, Amma Rukmani, and the family.
When Kalpna and I became friends in college, I did not know that she would be my sister for life. I also gained her parents, inheriting Prakash and Ganesh as brothers along with all the cousins, aunts, uncles, and now niece and nephews.
Appa Bala accepted a collect phone call from me many years ago. Those of you who have been around for a while know how expensive long distance phone calls used to be in the days before the ubiquity of cell phones. It was an international call as my plane, traveling from Morocco to New York, had had to make an emergency landing in the Azores Islands.
Well, I am forever grateful that Appa Bala not only accepted that phone call, but he also contacted my parents to let them know that I was okay.
I don't know how much that call cost, and he never allowed me to pay for it.
You will be missed.

Chittappa, in moments like these, words seem so feeble. Life is so precious, and death such a thief. I recall when I came to spend a few days with you in Sterling, one early afternoon you came home with a smirk on your face told and Mami and I let’s go to a fancy restaurant. I said I love seafood and you took me to the market and told me to pick everything I wanted. We all came home, cooked, and enjoyed our feast. I’ll always remember the time I spent with you! You are one of the wittiest men I’ve ever come across in my life. You certainly have a special place in my heart!

Sithappa, you gifted me your office Samsonite briefcase when I met you for the first time in London at Baby Amma’s house. It turned out to be my lucky briefcase and landed me with many opportunities that spanned the UK, Australia, Paris, and finally my job for life here in the USA. While I have since retired, I still have the briefcase in my home office, and it always reminds me of you.
